Studio The New Workspace by Studio Makkink & Bey

Studio 1 by Studio Makkink & Bey – Jurgen Bey and Chester Chuang

The theme of the first studio of INSIDE 16/17 is The NEW Workspace. We needed to think of new terms of working in space strengthened by our own manifesto.

The starting point of the process was a 1-day internship at nearby companies in The Hague. These companies were not all specialised in design, among them was a paper factory, a lunchcafe and even a cemetery. We had to research and analyze flows which you could find there (f.i. energy, waste and money), have an interview with the owner/employee and gather material which we could use for our new workspace. And most important, we worked and helped the company as a 1-day intern.

At the beginning, we struggled to create space with nothing. A chair and desk couldn’t be an initial element of design. But in the end, we’ve extended the range in terms of ‘working space’ and also got our own hands on experience with re-used material.
